Over the centuries of man’s existence, the one constant in disseminating knowledge has been the printed page.  Many consider the printing press to be the most important invention in human history, possibly outranked only by the wheel and the spoken language.  For the ability to record thoughts, ideas and facts has made it possible to retain ideas and facts, and transmit them not just to other persons but across time…in fact the written word is the first real “time machine” that has been created.

There have been frequent times in our history when people have thought books have become outmoded.  People felt that way when the radio and telephone came into common use.  The idea recurred when the television became our main means of entertainment and communication.  And today many felt that electronic and digital media have rendered books obsolete.  Yet in fact experience has shown repeatedly that books remain essential to the retention of human knowledge, facts and ideas.  And when batteries fail, systems are hacked, and plastics and metals melt we find ourselves returning to that old standby, the printed page when we want to obtain knowledge, transmit messages or thoughts, or for simple entertainment.  My personal favorite gift to people I care for is a gift card to Barnes and Noble.  I give them because I like to encourage people to read and increase their knowledge and awareness.  This year I will purchase them with a Groupon coupon for 10% off.

I will also buy books using Groupon coupons for up to 75% off during the coming holiday season.  This is an opportunity to get some of the latest works, as well as literary classics and reference works.  Indeed, one of the best gifts one can give a person is a collection of the best reference works for future use, including a dictionary, atlas and thesaurus.  While all can be found online, it’s good to have printed copies of each on hand at home.

Scientific Signature of God in the Qur’an

The Book appeared in the 7th century yet alludes to scientific concepts which were non-existent at the time. In fact, most of these concepts have only been unraveled in the past two centuries, some as recent as a few decades ago. Let me give you some examples to demonstrate the point. Referring to the origin of the universe, the Koran makes one of the most powerful scientific statements. Personally I regard this particular verse as the most compelling piece of evidence of the Book’s divine origin.

The Koran appeals to the atheistic mind. Do not the two major scientific discoveries of the last two centuries, i.e. the unitary origin of creation and the watery origin of life announced 1 400 years ago bear eloquent testimony to the truthfulness of the Koran and by implication His existence? The bracketed words are not my own interpretation, but are derived from other relevant verses.

Since the entire creation was contained in the initial submicroscopic singularity, this incredible mass density must have exerted a colossal gravitational force, pulling everything so to speak inwards, hence the term ‘closed up.’ Chapter 77 verse 25 makes reference to the attractive nature of gravity and chapter 15 verse 16 to the great power of the singularity which resides at the center of the black hole. One key Arabic word in chapter 21 verse 30 describes an entity which traps everything including light

Combining this information with its other meaning (absence of space), it is completely reasonable to interpret the beginning state as a black hole. Chapter 15 verse 27 refers to the fierce temperatures in the beginning. We arrive at the stunning conclusion; the closed up mass, the blackness, infinite density (no space) and the fierce temperatures are hallmarks of a singularity at the heart of a black hole – the initial state of the universe.

Could any human being have conceived such astonishing information of the origin of the universe 1 400 years ago? There is no manipulation of words and meaning. The Arabic words are precise and can be checked in any of the Arabic English dictionaries. The above verse is just one of the many hundreds of such verses in the Koran

From my own experience, I believe there are four key areas within an instructor’s teaching practice that can be leveraged to demonstrated availability for their students.

1. Interactions and Communication: Every interaction with your students is important. It helps to establish a working relationship that can become productive, leading to greater cooperation and acceptance of your feedback on the part of every student. Your interactions should be professional, rational, and warm. All communication should be thoughtful, with a tone that is responsive rather than reactive and emotional. Students will sense or perceive your disposition based upon the tone of the message. If you encourage them to ask questions, and you provide helpful assistance in a welcoming manner, your students will feel valued. More importantly, I am sharing my expertise through these strategies.
